JetBlue slashing summer schedules

JetBlue will trim its summer flight schedule to avoid more flight disruptions which have plagued the airline for days.
The carrier canceled more than 300 flights over the weekend.
It canceled 18% of flights on Saturday and 13% of Sunday flights.
“We’ve already reduced May capacity 8-10% and you can expect to see a similar size capacity pull for the remainder of the summer,” said Joanna Geraghty, JetBlue’s COO and president.
Airlines are struggling with staffing due to a surge in travelers for spring break and high summer travel demand.
“We are working around the clock to address some of the most difficult operating conditions we have ever faced as a company,” Geraghty wrote in an email to staff.
“Despite these challenges and, based on your feedback that the schedule is wound too tight, we know the best plan is to reduce capacity now.”
JetBlue has hired 2,500 new people this year but remains short-staffed.
Alaska Airlines is trimming its schedule through the end of June due to a pilot shortage.
“We’ve recently let down some of our valued guests by canceling an unusual number of flights. The primary cause of cancellations is the shortage of pilots available to fly versus what was planned when we built our April schedule in January.”
