JetBlue touts its carbon neutral credentials
JetBlue says it is now officially the country’s first carbon neutral domestic airline.
It has reached the milestone by carbon offsetting and switching to sustainable aviation fuel.
It started offsetting carbon dioxide emissions from jet fuel on 1 July for all domestic flights
The airline’s partnership with the CarbonFund.org Foundation had offset more than 2.6 billion pounds of CO2 emissions, and now it is targeting 17 billion pounds of CO2 offset a year.
"When projects that reduce CO2 emissions are developed, every ton of emissions reduced results in the creation of one carbon offset or carbon credit," the airline said.
Offset projects it is involved with can include landfill gas capture, solar and wind power developments, and forest conservation projects.
All the carbon offsets it buys are fully audited and verified, the airline says.
