JFK, Newark will reopen Wednesday, October 31 with limited service
John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty Airport will cautiously reopen for limited service on Wednesday morning at 7:00 in the morning.
As of press time (10:00 p.m.,Tuesday evening) JetBlue had posted a statement on its website that it expects its flights at JFK to return to 25% of their regular schedule on Wednesday, October 31 but it urged flyers to check the status of their flights before leaving for the airport. Other major airlines had not posted notices yet on flight schedules for the limited Newark and JFK openings.
MTA and Port Authority experts said at Tuesday’s press conference that both JFK and LaGuardia were flooded during the storm, but while JFK is readying for service, LaGuardia suffered more extensive damage and must be given an OK by the FAA to reopen.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says that:
JFK and Newark are open with limited service (check with your carrier)
LaGuardia and Teterboro airports remain closed.
AirTrain service to and from JFK and Newark airports is still suspended.
The Port Authority’s maritime facilities are still closed.
Public and private bus service out of the Port Authority bus terminal is still suspended.
MTA public buses were back in service on a limited (and temporarily free) basis as of Tuesday afternoon. The subways are still closed and may be closed for several days.
Travelers who are flying into New York need to know that taxis are currently operating on a group travel basis. Fares should not be more than the meter allows but Mayor Bloomberg announced at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon that extra travelers can ride for a suggested added fee of $10.00 per person.
Other than private cars, taxis and limited public buses, there is no other way to and from either JFK or Newark Airports as of Tuesday evening, October 30.
