Jordan attempts to attract US visitors

Wednesday, 20 Nov, 2002 0

Jordan’s tourism board is trying to increase its number of US visitors by quashing misconceptions about public safety in the country.

The Jordan Tourism Board, with is a part private, part public organisation, is targetting Christian, cultural/historical and ecotourism markets.

“We are a moderate, modern and peaceful country,” said JTB vice-chairman and director Marwan Khoury. “We are working with the private sector to come up with a programme to work more closely with the trade.

Travel from western Europe and North America is currently down around 50%.

Last year, the US state department cautioned US citizens in Jordan to “maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness to reduce their vulnerability.”
