Katherine open for business as usual for tourists
The Katherine Gorge will remain open for tourists, although swimming and canoeing have been suspended in the first gorge, as rangers have been unable to find an estimated 2.7m saltwater crocodile seen in the area this week and believed to be hiding in the gorge.
Rangers will continue their search after conducting a spotlight survey and helicopter surveillance of the area.
Senior wildlife officer Pat Carmody said, “We have a permanent trap located within the first gorge as part of the Katherine River crocodile management strategy.”
Despite the suspension of swimming and canoeing, travellers have been reminded by tourism operators the gorge can still be enjoyed via sightseeing boats and walking tracks.
Manager of the Katherine Visitors Centre Maureen Thearle said, “Many overseas tourists had cancelled plans to visit the gorge after hearing about the saltwater croc inhabiting the waterway.” “They think the gorge is closed but it is business as usual and there are plenty of alternatives to swimming or canoeing that are just as enjoyable,” she said.
“People can get on a tourist boat or go on one of the many walking tracks.” “It’s disappointing some people have decided to cancel their trip to the gorge as we’d had one of our busiest starts to October, particularly tourists from Germany and Switzerland.”
