‘KEEP CALM AND ACT GREEN’ at Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort, Monaco
The Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort, located on the border of the Larvotto Marine Reserve in the Principality of Monaco, is committed to sustainable development. The Hotel’s green team motto, ‘Keep Calm and Act Green’ sums up its enthusiastic approach toprotecting their beautiful corner of the Mediterranean.
Since October 2013, Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort has given structure and substance to its green development policy. A committee of volunteers, named the Bay Be Green Team was established at that time to bring together fifteen hotel members who meet weekly to activate and monitor sustainability activities.
The Bay Be Green Team uses the Green Globe Standard for Sustainable Tourism to guide their efforts, resulting in Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort once again being awarded Green Globe certification.
The hotel has been certified each year since April 2014 for their social and environmental actions. Staff members are active in recycling a variety of materials including printer cartridges, batteries, paper, plastic bottles, cans and more. Plastic caps are sent to the "Les Bouchons d’amour" association for recycling to help disabled persons.
The staff’s enthusiasm is shared with guests using a Shiro Alga Carta; a sign made from seaweed paper in the shape of a small green seahorse, which is placed in each room. Guests are encouraged to separate waste such as paper and batteries, and help reduce energy consumption. To maximise its fight against climate change, the hotel only utilises 100% green electricity and uses clean vehicles such as electric scooters and Twizzy cars.
Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort also makes valuable contributions to its local communities. The hotel partners with AMAPEI, offering employment to disabled adults working on basic tasks such as labelling packages. Several other local organizations also receive assistance, including, Les Bouchons d’Amour, Les Anges Gardiens de Monaco, SIVOM – No Christmas without Presents, Pacôme – Clothes Collection & Recycling, Scouts of Monaco , SOLIDARPOLE, France Cancer and The Foundation of Prince Albert II.
MONACOLOGY is an annual awareness week dedicated to raising environmental consciousness within the Principality of Monaco. During this festival last year,150 children aged 6 to 12 enjoyed sessions organised by the Bay Be Green Team members teaching basic sustainability concepts. The Bay Be Green Team prides itself on education activities and to date more than 230 hotel staff members have also been trained on sustainable development topics.
