Kenya steps up security, downplays risks
The Kenyan Tourism Federation says the government has moved to beef up security in the light of warnings of an increased risk of terrorism activity in capital city Nairobi.
Visitors can expect to see increased security checks in most places, including hotels, shopping malls and general public areas, KTF said in a statement.
“These checks are not in response to any specific known threat, but are actually precautionary measures to guarantee the safety of all visitors and residents.â€
Regions in close proximity to the Kenya-Somali Border remain “no go†areas until further notice although security measures introduced by the Kenyan government in hotspot Lamu “have gone a long way towards making the area safe for resumed visitationâ€, KTF said.
The updated Australian government’s Smart Traveller website advises travellers to “exercise a high degree of caution in Kenya at this time due to the high risk of terrorist attack, civil unrest and high crime levelsâ€.
It notes that Kenyan authorities have recently alerted the public to a heightened threat from terrorist attacks in Nairobi.
