Key West to commemorate Jimmy Buffett

Late singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett will be honored in Key West on August 30 through September 2.

Buffet and his signature sound are synonymous with Key West, the place where he developed the signature “tropical rock” style and laid-back vibe.

“Just a Few Friends Key West” will commemorate the island city’s favorite son with events including a “second line” memorial walking parade, concerts by Buffett’s musical friends and tribute bands, beach parties and more.

There will be walking and biking tours of his favorite spots, sailing excursions and other activities.

Buffett passed away almost a year ago.

He discovered Key West in the early 1970s and its influence is found in many of his most enduring songs, including the classic “Margaritaville.” He lived in Key West for many years.

Many sings include references to Key West characters and landmarks.

“Just a Few Friends” kicks off Friday, August 30, with a reading of a Florida State Legislature proclamation designating Jimmy Buffett Day.

This takes place outside his Shrimp Boat Sound recording studio.

There will also be a welcome party on the beach with live music.

On Saturday, there are activities spotlighting classic Jimmy Buffett songs with a margarita bar crawl and “Blue Heaven Rendezvous” trop-rock jam.

On Sunday, the Second Line Memorial Walking Parade takes place with strolling musicians and more.

Marchers proceed up Duval Street past the singer/songwriter’s original Margaritaville Store and Café, up to Truman Waterfront Park for the Party in the Park celebration.

It concludes on Labor Day with a seafood boil and a “Nautical Wheelers” sunset tribute concert. For more info and ticketing:  justafewfriendskeywest.com
