Koh Sumui begins the big clean-up
The big clean-up has started on Koh Samui as rain and winds across southern Thailand begin to ease.
Flooded streets and damaged infrastructure are still causing problems on the island but the local mayor believes 80 percent of the island is back to normal.
Some of the worst affected areas have been around Chaweng beach, the centre of tourist activities on the island.
Pumps are being deployed to drain floodwater from Chaweng.
“We will be back to normal in a couple of days, once the rain stops,” the mayor added.
Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways International have resumed flights, though some are still delayed. Ferries have started to operate again.
Although the floods in southern Thailand will stall tourism for a short time, the biggest impact is on farmers who have seen their crops and livestock washed away.
Dozens of people are also missing after a flash flood destroyed an entire village.
