Korean tourist survived six days in Australian wilderness without food
A trek into the Australian bush turned into quite an adventure for a young South Korean tourist.
Joohee Han, 25, spent six days alone and without food after falling into a deep ravine in remote northern Queensland.
She survived only on fresh water running down the ravine until she was rescued by emergency crews, who said the chances of survival there for that length of time were normally ‘near zero.’
She slipped into the ravine while taking photos and was knocked out unconscious for several hours.
Apart from that Joohee was found in ‘good spirits’ with only minor injuries.
She told friends she was going to hike around Mount Tyson, south of Cairns on June 1, but was not reported missing until several days later.
"She’d managed to find in the ravine running water coming down the rock face. The entire time she was missing she’d had no food with her at all," said Hannah Gaulke, Queensland Ambulance service flight medic.
"This is a first for someone in these conditions, where temperatures overnight had dropped below 10 degrees celcius. She had minimal gear for survival and for that length of time her chances of survival were near zero."
