Labour Party wants to work with Tourism industry

Federal Labor frontbencher Stephen Smith says the Opposition is working with the tourism sector on a proposal for overseas visitors to sign up to Australian values.

Earlier this week, federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley called for a commitment to values to be included in visa forms.

Mr Smith says the proposal initially caused some concern within the tourism sector.

“As soon as the tourism industry raised some concerns, Kim immediately wrote to them and started a dialogue with them,” he said.

“That’s now ongoing to ensure that when Kim’s proposal is implemented for tourists, it will work for tourists, it will work for the tourism industry, but more importantly it will work for the Australian nation state.”
