Lakeland, Florida Chapter 2: An architectural and cultural hub

Lakeland is not only a gateway to natural beauty but also a hub for architectural brilliance and unique cultural experiences including real life Rodeo.
From the serene Bok Tower Gardens to the visionary designs of Frank Lloyd Wright and the rustic cowboy charm of Westgate River Ranch, these landmarks showcase the region’s diverse attractions.
Bok Tower Gardens: A Symphony of Nature and Art
Perched on Iron Mountain near Lake Wales, Bok Tower Gardens is one of Florida’s most iconic destinations. When I say Mountain what that means in Florida is a small hill! This National Historic Landmark spans nearly 600 acres, beginning as a 50-acre sanctuary envisioned by Edward W. Bok in the 1920s. Bok was a Dutch born American publisher and author of some repute and gained enough wealth to indulge him and his family’s desire to build a lasting natural legacy for all to enjoy. Inspired by a desire to create a peaceful retreat, Bok enlisted renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. to transform a barren sandhill into lush gardens filled with native flora such as live oaks, magnolias, azaleas, and sabal palms. This abundance of flora and also helps to attract some of the most attractive birds in the region as well as migratory species. They whistle away to their hearts content in the serene surrounds of the Gardens. It’s safe to say the project a hundred years later has been successful as Bok Tower is an absolute delight.
At the heart of it all stands the majestic Singing Tower, a 205-foot Gothic Revival structure with Art Deco elements designed by architect Milton B. Medary from the nationally famous school of design in Philadelphia. The tower houses a 60-bell carillon that rings out daily musical performances. Its reflection pool enhances the tranquil ambiance, making it a perfect spot for quiet contemplation or photography. The bells, easily audible for miles around, are indeed melodic and calming.
Visitors can explore several attractions within the gardens:
Pinewood Estate: A Mediterranean Revival-style mansion that offers guided tours showcasing its historic architecture and furnishings.
Hammock Hollow Children’s Garden: A space designed for younger visitors with interactive play areas.
Nature Trails: Scenic paths meandering through wetlands and forests provide opportunities for birdwatching or leisurely walks.
Bok Tower Gardens is more than just a botanical treasure; it’s a living testament to Edward Bok’s vision of blending art, music, and nature in an inspiring sanctuary.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Masterpieces at Florida Southern College
Walking distance from the centre of Lakeland lies the Florida Southern College which is home to the world’s largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings. Known collectively as “Child of the Sun,” these structures were constructed between 1941 and 1958 as part of Wright’s vision for a “truly American campus” that harmonized with its natural surroundings. If you are familiar with Lloyd Wright’s work, then you will know that each example has a timeless style about it. If you didn’t, you would think they had been designed a few years ago, not over eighty. Style is permanent and fashion is temporary but you could not have a better example than these buildings, which even for an amateur admirer of architecture are magnificent.
The campus features twelve original Wright designs connected by Esplanades—covered walkways with cantilevered rooflines that provide shade while framing views of the sky. Each building reflects Wright’s innovative use of materials and his philosophy of organic architecture.
Key highlights include:
Annie Pfeiffer Chapel: The first structure completed on campus, known for its striking geometric design and dramatic use of light.
Water Dome: A vast circular fountain restored in 2007 to match Wright’s original plans, creating an impressive visual centrepiece.
Danforth Chapel: A smaller chapel adorned with stained glass windows in warm orange and gold tones.
Polk County Science Building: A facility featuring Wright-designed planetarium spaces.
In 2013, Florida Southern College added the Usonian House to its collection—a residence originally intended as faculty housing but delayed due to funding constraints during Wright’s era. This Mid-Century Modern home exemplifies Wright’s principles with open-plan living spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows.
Visitors can explore through guided or self-guided tours offered at the Sharp Family Tourism and Education Centre. The campus showcases Wright’s genius, offering an unparalleled experience for architecture buffs.
Westgate River Ranch: A Taste of the Wild West
For those seeking an entirely different cultural experience, Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo offers a glimpse into Florida’s cowboy heritage. Many people visiting the sunshine state are not aware of the long history of ranching in the state that goes back to the 16th century when cattle were introduced. A unique cowboy culture developed known as the ‘Florida Crackers’ with cattle being herded across vast open ranges. Situated on 1,700 acres of pristine wilderness near Lake Wales, this western-style ranch is the largest east of the Mississippi River. So, if you have never experienced being home on the range then now is your chance.
The ranch provides a variety of cowboy culture activities:
Saturday Night Rodeos: Weekly events featuring bull riding, barrel racing, and trick riding.
Horseback Riding: Guided trail rides through scenic landscapes.
Outdoor Adventures: Boating, fishing, archery, swamp buggy rides, and airboat tours.
Glamping Accommodations: Unique lodging options such as luxury tepees and Conestoga wagons.
Westgate River Ranch celebrates Florida’s frontier spirit with modern amenities. Whether you’re watching cowboys in action or enjoying a campfire under starry skies, this destination provides an authentic Wild West experience.
Lakeland seamlessly blends natural beauty with cultural landmarks as well as the wild west allure of Westgate River Ranch.
