Las Vegas hotel security again under scrutiny after security guards gunned down

Tuesday, 2 January 20183 min read

Las Vegas hotel security is in the spotlight again after two security guards were shot dead at an off-strip casino hotel.

The security guards had responded to an early morning disturbance in a room at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur.

After gunning them down, shooter Christopher Olague fled the scene and later turned the gun on himself.

Police said it was an isolated incident.

"I want you to know right now that this has nothing to do with terrorism," Capt. Robert Plummer said.

The male and female security guards were in their 40s, and only one was armed.

It came just a day before New Year celebrations, which saw a heightened level of security across the city.

There has been added scrutiny on security at Las Vegas strip hotels and across the country since the mass shooting incident in October when a gambler gunned down 58 people from a suite at the Mandalay Bay Hotel.
