Lonely Planet to 'bring guidebooks to life' with new tours

Lonely Planet is launching a series of tours in partnership with Intrepid Travel.

The launch of Lonely Planet Experiences is the latest new venture by the publisher, which is expanding into new business opportunities under the strategic direction of recently appointed CEO Luis Cabrera.

The company said the tours ‘will bring Lonely Planet guidebooks to life for the first time’.

Lonely Planet Experiences have been designed to have a low environmental footprint while having a positive impact on local communities.

All tours will be in small groups and led by a local leader, using local transportation, support locally owned-businesses and, like all Intrepid Travel trips, be 100% carbon-neutral.

The portfolio will include 200 day tours, operated by Intrepid Travel’s day-tour company, Urban Adventures and more than 130 multi-day, across 65 countries.

Clients will benefit from exclusive discounts on Lonely Planet’s guidebooks, free access to Lonely Planet’s flagship Guides app, plus additional Lonely Planet insight throughout the tours.

Luis Cabrera said: "For over four decades, travellers have looked to Lonely Planet for trusted travel advice.

"Now, global explorers looking for the inside track can journey along with us on this new range of tours. This is an exciting innovation and evolution for the Lonely Planet brand."

Intrepid Travel CEO James Thornton added: "These experiences combine our expertise to create a new tour range that will support local communities, protect our natural environment and ensure travellers see the world in a responsible and sustainable way.

"Lonely Planet helped pioneer access to more authentic and grassroots experiences for independent travellers. We’re thrilled to be part of the next phase of their growth and helping to make sustainable experience-rich travel a mainstay for travellers everywhere."

Day options include a 2.5-hour Tour Through Tokyo’s Kitchen from £59pp, while multi-day tours include a 15-day Explore Egypt itinerary from £815pp.
