Los Angeles may force ridesharing vehicles to go electric

Monday, 30 Dec, 2019 0

The city of Los Angeles may make it compulsory for all ridesharing drivers to operate electric vehicles.

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti told the Financial Times he is mulling legislation for rideshare services to go fully electric.

It is just at the initial ideas stage at present.

"We have the power to regulate car share. We can mandate, and are looking closely at mandating, that any of those vehicles in the future be electric," Garcetti said.

If it gets off the ground, it would likely only affect new vehicles in the future for Uber, Lyft and other on-demand operators.

Garcetti didn’t mention whether this would be extended to conventional taxi vehicles.

The city would need to open formal public consultation before pushing ahead with new regulations.

The city is among the most progressive in the country in its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, much to the annoyance of the fossil fuel lobby and President Trump.

LA aims to go carbon-neutral by 2050 and to recycle all of its wastewater within 15 years.

It has targeted 2036 to take at least 80% of its electricity from renewable sources.

It is ramping up the purchase of electric vehicles for its public transportation fleet with more electric buses.
