Lost airline bags good news for some businesses
For air travelers, the new security measures mean more lost bags, but companies supplying luggage shipping are finding the move is good for business.
Among those companies: CruiseShippers, which provides luggage packaging and shipping services for the cruise industry.
“Imagine by-passing all those lines at the airport and arriving at your cruise whip worry free because you know your bags are waiting for you in your stateroom,” said Gary Billiard, president.
Last year, an estimated 30 million pieces of luggage were lost by the airlines. Since August 10, when more stringent regulations for carry-on items were issued, the amount of checked baggage increased by an estimated 40%.
Last year was the worst ever for mishandled and stolen bags since 1990, according to the US Department of Transportation (DOT).
The worst offenders were the smaller, short-hop airlines. Atlantic Southeast had the worst record.
Among the major carriers, US Airways was the worst for the first six months of this year, followed by Delta.
Hawaiian Airlines had the best record, according to the DOT.
CruiseShippers has been in business since 1995 and provides service in all major North American Ports, as well as in Europe and the South Pacific.
