More than 38 million Americans are expected to hit the road and join the long airport lines for the Memorial Day holiday, making it the busiest for a decade.
AAA predicts about 700,000 more people will travel than last year, and 89% will drive to their destinations.
AAA cites low gas prices as the main driver for more journeys by road – but perhaps there is also the fear of being stuck for hours in TSA screening lines at airports.
Air travel is expected to rise slightly during the May 26-30 period to 2.6 million passengers while there is an expected drop in trips by cruise ships, trains and buses.
"Ticket prices are down, so we do see a slight increase here in air travel," said AAA’s Tamra Johnson.
According to AAA travel agency sales, top Memorial Day destinations include Orlando, Myrtle Beach, Washington, New York, Miami and San Francisco.
