Lufthansa cancels over 500 flights today

Thursday, 21 March 20133 min read

Lufthansa has cancelled over 500 flights today due to strikes by its staff at airports across Germany.

Staff are staging a walk-out at Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf, Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne and other locations between 5am and midday today in protest over wages and working conditions.

Lufthansa has cancelled most of its domestic and short haul flights during this time, but long haul flights are expected to operate on time.

The airline said regrets any inconvenience to Lufthansa passengers and said it will do its utmost to minimise any impact.

The Verdi union is calling for a 5.2% increase in wages for employees at several Lufthansa divisions.

But Lufthansa says it is trying to cut costs in challenging market conditions and wants to freeze salaries and make staff work an extra hour per week.
