Luxury cruise ship fails health inspection

Friday, 19 Jul, 2013 0

One of the most luxurious cruise ships in the world has failed a health inspection.

Silversea’s 382-passenger Silver Shadow failed a surprise inspection which took place in Alaska on June 17 but is just coming to light this week.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gave the ship a failing score of 84 out of 100 but has not yet disclosed the reasons for the failure. A score below 86 is counted as a failing.

In a statement sent to other media, Silversea said the ship has scored in the high 90s on its previous inspections.

"Silversea is deeply disappointed by this specific and only unsatisfactory score and has taken immediate measures to address the issues identified in the inspection report," it said.

"Following a thorough review of Silver Shadow’s procedures, we have taken the necessary measures to ensure that the standards are the best in the industry.

"Silversea is sincerely sorry for the shortcomings in Silver Shadow’s evaluation and is committed to ensuring that future inspections result in higher scores in line with the usual Silversea standards."

On his website, Miami-based maritime lawyer Jim Walker claims he had been contacted by crew members on the ship complaining they were forced to hide food, cooking utensils, cutlery and pots and pans in their cabins and remote hallways to avoid detection by US health inspectors.

Silversea declined to comment further on these particular allegations.
