Niagara Falls’ iconic Maid of the Mist sightseeing boats, which have been part of the tourist landscape for more than 150 years, are moving into the modern age.

It plans to become a zero-emission operator with new all-electric boats.

The first two catamaran-style electric boats are expected to debut in September.

They will be powered by rechargeable lithium ion battery packs and an onshore charging system will be installed.

It will lead to smoother, quiet cruises and no air pollution.

"The Maid of the Mist has offered tours of Niagara Falls and of the Niagara River Gorge for more than a century, and are a signature tourism attraction," New York governor Cuomo said.

"The new zero-emission boats will continue that proud tradition while continuing our efforts to make New York State a premier environmentally friendly tourism destination."

The existing diesel powered Maid of the Mist VI and Maid of the Mist VII will be replaced by the new eco-friendly vessels.

The Maid of the Mist has been plying the waters of the lower Niagara River since 1846, originally by sidewheeel steamboat.

The fleet has been powered by diesel since 1946.

"It makes perfect sense for Maid of the Mist to be a world leader with the implementation of this green technology," said Maid of the Mist president Christopher Glynn.
