A major security operation is under way in Paris after an incident this morning at the Louvre.

According to reports, a French soldier on guard at the museum opened fire on a suspected attacker.

A man shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ is reported to have attacked the soldier with a machete when trying to enter the museum’s underground shop.

He was seriously injured when the soldier opened fire.

The UK Foreign Office is advising anyone in the area to exercise caution, avoid the affected area and follow the advice of the local authorities

The Louvre was evacuated. Around 250 tourists were inside the world-famous museum at the time and, based on photographs posted on Twitter, were told to crouch on the floor by security staff until they were led to safety.

French police say the attacker was carrying two rucksacks but neither contained explosives.
