Malaysia Airlines seeks JAL joint venture approval

Malaysia Airlines will beef up its codesharing partnership with Japan Airlines to a joint business collaboration.

This would involve close cooperation on routes between Japan and Malaysia, specifically Tokyo-Kuala Lumpur, Osaka-Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo-Kota Kinabalu.

The airlines would also partner on marketing and sales, revenue planning and tweak network capacity.

The Oneworld carriers launched a codesharing partnership back in 2012.

It would be Malaysia Airlines’ first joint business arrangement with another carrier.

The airline confirmed it had submitted an application last month to regulator Mavcom for anti-trust immunity.

In it, it touts ‘significant consumer and economic benefits’ and even with the tie-up, there would still be robust market competition.

AirAsia X would still be the market leader with slightly more capacity than the combined Malaysia Airlines-JAL alliance.
