Mega ferries to operate Dover-Calais
P&O Ferries plans to introduce the largest ever cross channel ferries on the Dover-Calais route.
The company has placed an order worth more than 350 million euros for two 49,000 tonne vessels.
The ships will be 210 metres long and will be the largest ships capable of fitting into facilities in the channel ports, according to the company.
They will double the freight carrying capacity of the ships they are replacing when they enter service in December 2010 and September 2011. The vessels will have a capacity for 160 articulated lorries and a third deck for 250 tourist vehicles.
Each will carry up to 1,500 passengers and will replace Pride of Dover and Pride of Calais on the key short sea route.
P&O Ferries claims the two new ferries will offer “significant advances” in fuel efficiency.
“The company, and ultimately its customers, will also benefit from the huge economies of scale and lower running costs that such large ships can offer,” a statement said.
