Mexico fines airlines over illegal baggage fees
Mexico’s consumer protection agency has taken aim at a group of airlines charging baggage fees on routes to the US and Canada.
The Profeco agency has slapped fines totalling 22.4 million pesos (US $1.2 million) for illegally charging passengers for the first checked bag.
Aeroméxico, Interjet, Volaris, VivaAerobus and US carrier JetBlue Airways were fined.
The agency also accused the airlines of misleading wording in contracts of carriage and ‘other practices that violate the rights of passengers.’
Agency chief Rafael Ochoa Morales said United and American Airlines are also on the radar for charging baggage fees and investigations will be concluded soon.
New regulations allow passengers checked baggage of up to 25 kg free of charge on domestic and international flights which depart within Mexico.
