Mexico suspends Cuba crash charter airline

Wednesday, 23 May 20183 min read

Mexico’s air regulator has temporarily suspended a charter company whose plane was involved in last Friday’s deadly crash in Cuba.

It came as the death toll rose to 111 after one of only three people pulled alive from the crash site died in hospital.

Cuban state media named Gretell Landrove Font, 23 as the latest fatality.

Mexico’s General Directorate of Civil Aviation released a statement saying it has suspended operations of charter carrier Damojh Airlines, which operated the aging Boeing 737 for Cubana.

The suspension will enable inspectors to conduct an ‘extraordinary’ review to ensure it is complying with all regulations.

Its safety performance has come under close scrutiny after two previous complaints came to light this week.

The aviation directorate said Damojh Airlines, which operates in the name of Global Air, had twice been suspended in 2010 and 2013, but was allowed to resume services after meeting safety and maintenance standards again.

Mexico and the US National Transportation Safety Board have sent officials to assist with the investigation along with inspectors from Boeing.
