Mexico’s Yucatán state joins UNWTO Sustainable Tourism Observatories

The state of Yucatán has joined the UNWTO Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories.

It will help the state manage tourism development in a responsible and sustainable manner.

“The INSTO network provides an opportunity to contribute to sustainable development,” said UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.

“We welcome Yucatán as a new member.”

Tourism accounts for 11% of Yucatán’s overall GDP.

It attracted 2.1 million overnight tourists in 2019.

Yucatan’s priorities include ecosystem conservation, water quality and sustainable energy.

The Tourism Observatory will monitor INSTO key areas like employment, economic benefits, energy and water management.
