Michigan Launches a First-of-its-Kind Music Album
The US state of Michigan has announced the creation of a first-of-its kind ambient music album. "Pure Sounds of Michigan" takes listeners on a sunrise to sunset virtual listening tour of the state from coast to coast as inspired by some of Michigan’s most talented musicians. It features the natural sounds heard throughout some of the most popular parks in the state as interpreted by some of Michigan’s most talented musicians and was created in honour of the 100th anniversary of Michigan State Parks celebration.
The album was composed using signature ambient sounds of nature captured from 10 Michigan State Parks throughout the Upper and Lower Peninsulas – from gentle streams to rolling waves and indigenous birds to a variety of Michigan’s natural elements. Designed to inspire travel throughout the state, the album utilises the power of sound to generate fond memories of past visits to natural areas.
For example, ‘City of Sand’ was inspired by the amazing sand dunes in Michigan, that offer breath-taking views or thrilling experiences across the state, recognised nationally for their beauty. The Porcupine Mountains and their spectacular waterfalls influenced the sounds within ‘Lake of Clouds’ and ‘Island Drift’ was based upon Michigan’s spectacular Mackinac Island.
Two Michigan-based composers acquired high quality, field recordings of each ‘pure’ sound across the ten state parks. The raw, recorded sounds were then sent to other Michigan composers, who transformed them into the musical tones and rhythm tracks which were instrumental in creating a compilation of 10 ambient soundscapes.
The entire album, which took a year to make, is now available via free download on various digital platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Google Play.

Notes to Editors
The State of Michigan is a state blessed with the riches of unspoiled nature: the longest freshwater coastline in the United States, lakes that feel like oceans, shimmering beaches, miles and miles of cherry orchards, glorious sunrises and sunsets, daytime skies of the deepest blue, nighttime skies scattered with stars.
Home to more than 100 public beaches, some of the highest freshwater sand dunes in the world, stunning multi-colored sandstone cliffs, two National Lakeshores and the only national marine sanctuary in the Great Lakes, the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Lake Huron. More than 129 lighthouses, numerous maritime museums, ten shipwreck-diving preserves and historic military fortifications rim Michigan’s Great Lakes shoreline.
Lakes, campgrounds, wildlife refuges and 103 Michigan state parks and recreation areas create a wide variety of recreational pursuits. Rivers for water sports, and thousands of miles of hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails thread their way among some 100 species of trees.
Long days, relaxing weather and more than 650 pristine Michigan courses make for the perfect tee time. Because being able to play all day is Pure Michigan. www.michigan.org
