Midcounties completes transfer of 16 Central England Co-operative branches
Midcounties-owned Co-operative Travel has finalised an agreement with Central England Co-operative to transfer 16 branches.
Fourteen have already opened as Co-operative Travel, part of the Midcounties Co-operative portfolio, while the other two will open in forthcoming weeks.
In July 2020, Midcounties Co-operative announced that the company was entering into an agreement with Central England Co-operative to transfer 16 of its travel branches to Co-operative Travel. The agreement includes colleagues employed in these branches.
The 14 branches that have transferred to Midcounties Co-operative and are now open are located in Allenton (Derbyshire), Atherstone (Warwickshire), Lowestoft (Suffolk), Castle Donington, Ibstock and Whetstone (Leicestershire), Diss, Kings Lynn and Thetford (Norfolk), Erdington (West Midlands), Market Deeping (Lincolnshire), Oakham (Rutland), March and Peterborough (Cambridgeshire).
The branch in Beccles, Suffolk, is moving into new premises and will reopen in the autumn. Some staff from the Beccles branch are currently working from Lowestoft, the other branch in the county. The branch in Glenfield, Leicestershire, will open in two weeks’ time.
Store fronts, interiors and staff uniforms will be changed to the new branding ‘over time’.
Natalie Turner, Head of Branches for Co-operative Travel, said: "I am delighted that Midcounties’ Co-operative Travel now has a presence in several new counties across the UK, including Suffolk, Norfolk, Rutland and Lincolnshire. The new branches will complement our existing trading areas whilst providing further growth for our brand. 78 former Central England Co-operative colleagues have joined Co-operative Travel, bringing our portfolio of Co-operative Travel shops to over 70.
"Our new colleagues are eager to be an active part of the high street and their communities once again, offering the wide range of travel experiences and brands that we sell, with holidays at home and abroad to suit every taste and budget."
From this week, many branches are allowing customers to pop in without an appointment, as long as the two-metre social distance guidelines can be met.
