Midwest, Northeast braced for another Artic blast

Tuesday, 21 January 20143 min read

Another wave of cold Artic weather with near-freezing temperatures is set strike early Tuesday across the mid-Atlantic and northeastern US.

The National Weather Service said a winter storm could dump up to 10 inches of snow in many areas with single-digit temperatures by nightfall.

The so-called ‘Artic air mass’ is moving northwards from North Carolina, with a risk of heavy snow in Washington, Philadelphia, New York and Boston over the next 24 hours, according to a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather, John Feerick.

"It’s probably going to be pretty intense as it pushes off the coast and all the big cities are probably looking at a half a foot of snow," he said.

Storm warnings have been posted across the region with a combination of heavy snow and freezing rain likely causing severe travel problems through the day.

Over 1,500 flights have been canceled so far including dozens of transatlantic services.

A Weather Prediction Center advisory expects the heaviest snow in southern New England accompanied by gusty winds while the upper Midwest may be affected by ‘bitter wind chills.’
