Companies report no cancellations but terror threat appears to be real

Tourism to India has not suffered following last week’s bombings in Bombay – but there are signs that India could be faced with more terrorism in the near future.

Tour companies specialising in India told Saturday’s Daily Telegraph that they have had no cancellations since last week’s bombing, which killed more than 50 people, and that BA and Air India are operating as normal to Bombay.

Philip Hamilton-Grierson reportedly told the newspaper that tourism was “unlikely to suffer” unless the bombings turned out to be part of a wider campaign. The Foreign Office appears to be of the same opinion, saying there is no reason to believe that foreign nationals were a target for the bombers.

However, there are signs that the bombing may not be an isolated case; a bomb has this morning exploded in a tunnel near the Kashmir Valley, causing traffic chaos in the region, while anti-terrorist forces in Bombay yesterday claimed to have prevented a “spectacular” attack by a Pakistan-based militant group.
