Moevenpick Hotel Munster: Gold Alternatives for the Future
Mövenpick Hotel Münster lies on a peaceful, leafy green site just a 15 minute walk away from the city center. The spacious, comfortable German business hotel is located close to the lovely Lake Aasee where guests can enjoy walking, jogging or sailing.
Green Globe congratulates Mövenpick Hotel Münster on achieving Gold Status for five years of continuous certification. The hotel also received a commendable compliance score of 80%.
Angelina Wendt, Human Resources Manager at the hotel said, "The Green Globe Certification shows us possibilities in how to run business oriented toward the future that we can be proud of. Due to certification, we have to think of alternative ways for the next generation and beyond. It is wonderful to be part of it!"
From kitchens to offices and up to the rooftop, Mövenpick Hotel Münster is constantly integrating eco-friendly practices within its daily operations. Visitors may be surprised to know that the buzzing bees they hear live not in the surrounding trees and shrubs but on the hotel roof itself.
The Mövenpick Hotel Münster goes one next step further in sustainability and in association with Münsterhonig creates a local and premium honey product. About 20,000 busy bees make honey in their new beehives on the hotel’s roof during the Spring and Summer. And an official beemaster ensures that everything goes well with the property’s newest guests. Contrary to popular belief, the bees are not the least bit dangerous to others as they stay close to their queen and are not interested in human beings or tempted by sweet treats other than the floral kind. Hotel Münster staff are delighted with their beehives and enjoyed tasting the new Spring honey (Frühlinghonig). The honey is used in kitchens and sold at the hotel.
To reduce its environmental impact, the entire hotel has changed over to using Evolution White Paper produced by Steinbeis Papier GmbH in Germany. It is an uncoated paper (WFU) completely chlorine and wood free, manufactured out of 100% recycled material. This paper is endorsed by two important ecolabels – the Blue Angel and Nordic Swan labels.
The property has invested in a new wall covering for the main building that meets the newest regulations for saving energy. The existing red clinker façade has been replaced by a curtain-wall with air spaces that provide better heat insulation during the colder months. The curtain wall is a high performance system, designed to be frost-proof and weather-resistant thereby requiring very little maintenance.
A brand new kitchen has also been successfully completed. The floors, walls and sanitation systems have been completely renovated. And existing kitchen equipment has been replaced with new equipment that meets sustainable standards. Actual needs and processes were also assessed and methods adapted to keep up with the ever-changing culinary demands of a working kitchen. An investment of €600,000 has been used to provide sustainable alternatives for a green future. Energy savings of up to 30% will be made due to this reinvestment.
