Mombasa violence condemned by hoteliers
Hotels owners in Mombasa say the recent violence in the city is threatening its tourism industry.
Tourism is the backbone of the Kenyan city’s economy.
Police this week fired tear gas to disperse Muslim protesters who have looted shops and burned barricades in the coastal city.
The protests follow the drive-by shooting of radical Muslim preacher Aboud Rogo Mohammed on Monday.
Reuters reports that the cleric had been accused by the UN and US of recruiting and funding Islamist fighters in Somalia.
"It’s tricky to even take them [tourists] or pick them from the airport because the main highway from the airport is the epicentre of the chaos," said Mohammed Hersi, who runs the Whitesands Hotel.
Mombasa, Kenya’s second biggest city, has a majority Muslim population.
Kenya saw 10.4% growth in Australian visitor numbers for the first half of 2012. Total Australian visitors January to June 2012 was 9,904 compared with 8,975 same period 2011.
