Monorail shutdown planned at Newark airport

Wednesday, 9 April 20143 min read

Airport officials at Newark Liberty International Airport are warning flyers to prepare for extra time to get to and from the airport and transit between terminals.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said it intends to temporarily close the AirTrain monorail system completely from May 1, for more than two months to make repairs along a two-mile stretch of track.

Rail services from Newark Penn Station to the airport will also be canceled as the airport train station is linked to terminal buildings by the monorail.

The system will impact up to 30,000 passengers a day during the 75-day shutdown.

Work will be carried out by rail manufacturer Bombadier, which initially installed the monorail system in 1996.

Replacement shuttle buses will run connecting the airport and Newark Penn Station, calling at terminals A, B and C, parking lots and rental car stations.

Port Authority deputy aviation director Huntley Lawrence said the project will cost $20 million with an additional $7 million set aside to pay for buses, drivers and extra customer service staffs.
