Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel: Organic and Biodiversity Achievements

Monday, 23 Sep, 2016 0

The Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel is inspired by the glamour of the Roaring Twenties combined with the beauty of its location directly on the waters of the French Riviera. Contemporary design and styling meets the spirit of a bygone golden era at the elegant hotel.

Green Globe congratulates the Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel on its certification for the third consecutive year.

Close to nature, Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel’s main focus is to reduce its environmental impact. All five of its restaurants – Elsa, The Deck, La Vigie, Cabanas and La Pizzeria use 100% organic fruits and vegetables. Elsa first received Bio certification by Ecocert, a French leader in organic certification in 2013. The restaurant became the first gourmet restaurant in the PACA region to obtain category 3 organic certification and the following year, was awarded a Michelin star under the talent and creativity of Chef Paolo Sari.

The Monte-Carlo Beach Spa also features new high-end skincare organic beauty treatments using Ymalia cosmetics made of exclusive Cosmébio-labelled formulations. Furthermore, Casanera 100% organic amenities made in Corsica including shampoo, shower gel and body lotion are available in guest bathrooms.

The hotel signed The Relais et Chateaux Vision at UNESCO in Paris in 2014. Relais et Chateaux is a membership association for independent hoteliers committed to a vision of sustainability for the future. This vision encourages signatories to support wide-ranging matters such as local farmers and fishermen, to protect and promote biodiversity, reduce food waste and save energy and water.

A spectacular setting of lush greenery, sea and sky surrounds the hotel. La Vigie Lounge & Restaurant is an especially protected part of the property tucked inside a pine wood with diverse native fauna and flora. Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer has an eco-responsible management approach for park and garden maintenance that has been part of its sustainable development policy since 2007. For this purpose, no chemical treatments are used at the hotel, only local plants that are naturally resistant to the climatic conditions are chosen and biodiversity encouraged.

As biodiversity is an important part of the hotel’s sustainable management strategy, several projects have been launched to restore the many different local species. Teams are developing a program with the French Bird Protection League national association to support and preserve birds, mammals and insect species that are living on La Vigie. In addition, last year the Monte-Carlo Beach hotel installed an insect hotel that is home to insects that help repel pest organisms. There are also plans to put information boards and signage along a designated route to raise awareness amongst guests about the hotel’s approach toward biodiversity.

A strong involved team, namely the Beach Green Spirit Team, drives the Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel’s sustainable policy. The Team was established four years ago and holds regular meetings to coordinate ongoing projects and launch new actions and initiatives. This ensures all policies are complete and coherent prior to dissemination to the different service areas of the property. The group is currently working on A Good Practices Guide for individual departments that outline the sustainable philosophy of the hotel through advice regarding day-to-day environmentally friendly actions. It is anticipated that the environmental performance of the hotel will improve with the new guides. The Beach Green Spirit Team also participate in the No Finish Line charity run that donates 1€ per kilometer crossed to projects to assist disadvantaged children.

Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel supports local charities and takes part in different actions to fulfill its social responsibilities. The hotel participates in the annual Monacology event that educates Monegasques children about ecology through various workshops. In addition, several hundred kilos of plastic caps are collected each year for the French charity Bouchons d’amour (Caps of Love) that raises money for disabled people by selling plastic bottle caps to a company that recycles plastic into plastic pallets. The property also helps the Monegasque association Anges Gardiens (Guardian Angels) with their work to improve homeless people’s lives. Retired pillows and bed covers and products such as left over shampoo, shower gel and body lotion are donated for distribution to those in need.

Since its first Green Globe certification in 2014, the Monte-Carlo Beach participates in Earth Hour celebrations every year. On this special evening, the hotel turns off lighting and informs and raises awareness amongst guests about energy saving and ecology. Romantic candlelight dinners are also organized to take full advantage of this unique event.
