More Brits holiday at home, says lastminute.com
Lastminute.com customers are following the trend for domestic breaks with the online travel agent reporting UK bookings up 16% year on year and UK hotel- only bookings up by 40%.
The site says Cornwall is high on holidaymakers’ wishlists while city break bookers are heading for Liverpool in their droves, thanks to its ubiquitous media coverage as it progresses through its 2008 Capital of Culture year. Figures show bookings have leapt to the city by 136% year on year. Edinburgh has also seen a huge 69% increase.
The British seaside is enjoying a renaissance, says Lastminute.com, with bookings to Brighton up 63%, Blackpool 88%, Scarborough 37%, Bournemouth 33% and Newquay an enormous 125%.
The site notes that serviced apartments are also generating interest Managing director John Bevan said:“The UK is expected to benefit from the current credit crunch with many customers deciding on a holiday at home as one of their breaks this year. We want to make sure that we offer the best domestic holiday products and have increased our product to meet popular demand.”
