More than 45 million Americans are taking to the road, rail and air this holiday weekend.
The AAA has forecast 45.1 million Americans will be traveling for Memorial Day weekend, with nearly four million flying to their destination.
“Many Americans say they’re taking advantage of the long weekend to spend time with loved ones, even if they are staying closer to home amid concerns over travel costs,” the organization said.
About 45.1 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home over the long weekend.
This is up about 1.4 million compared to last year, and would beat the previous record of 44 million set 20 years ago.
As always, the vast majority will drive to their destination, with 87% taking road trips.
Gas prices are also lower on average compared to last year.
“With the unofficial start of summer, demand is expected to rise, and pump prices may creep up along with it,” the AAA added.
It expects 3.61 million Americans will travel by plane, up nearly 2% increase on last year.
Domestic airfares are also up about 2% since last year.
It is the first busy holiday weekend since the enforcement of REAL ID.
“TSA is ready for the additional passenger volume, and we look forward to welcoming families traveling during this peak period,” said TSA acting Administrator Ha McNeill.
“As a friendly reminder, to ensure a smooth screening experience, bring acceptable forms of ID like your REAL ID.”
The TSA says 93% of passengers have been presenting a REAL ID document or an acceptable alternative since the requirement came into force on May 7.
