Green Globe congratulates Mövenpick Hotel Ibn Battuta Gate, Dubai on achieving Gold Membership with its recertification for the fifth consecutive year.

Robert Barker, General Manager of Mövenpick Hotel Ibn Battuta Gate said, "We are delighted to have been re-certified by Green Globe. We are very proud of the team at Mövenpick Hotel Ibn Battuta Gate who are all truly dedicated to environmentally sustainable tourism and this has been demonstrated through a variety of initiatives.

"Along with our business partners we are committed to making a difference by reducing the hotel’s environmental impact," added General Manager Barker.

The busy hotel located next to the Ibn Battuta Shopping Mall, has made great efforts in lowering its overall carbon footprint over the last five years. A recent re-lamping program has seen 800 incandescent lamps replaced with energy efficient LEDs, helping to deliver a genuine energy reduction of 1.28%. This is approximately 172,194 kwh lower or around the same the amount of energy used by190 households.

To further reduce carbon emissions Mövenpick Hotel Ibn Battuta Gate earlier this year installed an electric car charger, which is one of only two docks located within a hotel in Dubai. The charging station is capable of charging two cars simultaneously and is free to use for electric vehicle drivers with a green card charger.

Waste reduction has also been a priority for the hotel and since implementing a paper and carton recycling system in 2011, the hotel has collected an average of 1,860 kilograms per month for recycling, comprised of 92% carton and 2% paper. This is roughly equivalent to protecting 380 trees, each around 20 years old, every year.

The hotel’s waste diversion from landfill was at 17.74% in 2015 and this year has increased to more than 20%. Annual waste reduction is at approximately 60 metric tons, a 7.1% saving for 2015, and this year a waste audit has been completed to identify further reductions.

The staff at Mövenpick Hotel Ibn Battuta Gate work at a number of initiatives throughout the year to bring charity to the less fortunate as well as protect the environment. Each year during Ramadan clothing is collected for donation. This year staff also participated in Walk for Education, which invites UAE citizens, residents and visitors to walk three kilometres to highlight the plight of children in developing countries who walk an average of three kilometres every day to attend school. A team from the hotel also participated in the annual Clean Up UAE campaign, which managed to collect more that 20 tonnes of rubbish from major cities and towns across the UAE.
