The crowded Malaysian domestic air market is about to get even more competitive.
New budget airline Rayani Air has officially announced itself as the country’s latest aviation venture and selected the island of Langkawi as its aviation hub.
It plans to serve the cities of Kota Baru and Kuala Lumpur from Langkawi, and has ambitions to serve international destinations..
"The company has allocated two planes for overseas flight operations next year," said managing director, Ravi Alagendrran.
Langkawi has seen a big increase in general tourism and flight frequencies in recent years.
It is served by Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and Malindo Air, and budget carrier AirAsia said last month the island would become its next international hub airport.
"We are working closely with the government in trying to see how we can build Langkawi as the region’s international hub. You can see that happening sometime towards the end of this year," AirAsia CEO Aireen Omar said in October.
