New Canadian ULCC Jetlines chooses Vancouver base

Canada’s next ultra-low-cost airline startup has picked Vancouver International Airport as its base to launch services.

The country’s second busiest airport was chosen for its large catchment population, affordable fees and easy access to downtown by rapid transit rail.

"The Greater Vancouver area population, cost to operate from the airport, and transit accessibility, linked with the enormous tourist attraction that Vancouver has, provides Jetlines with a massive business opportunity," said Jetlines CEO Javier Suarez.

The company previously said it would base its operations out of Abbotsford International Airport.

The carrier will base the first two Airbus A320 aircraft at YVR and the airport has guaranteed slots for its initial flight schedule.

Vancouver International handled 25.9 million travellers last year.

The service launch is still subject to regulatory approvals.

"It is great to hear that this Canadian-operated airline is making positive progress to begin offering service. We are excited that Jetlines intends to offer flights from YVR across Canada and to several sun destinations," said Vancouver Airport Authority public affairs VP, Anne Murray.
