New Greek tourist tax comes into force in January

Friday, 20 October 20173 min read

The Greek government is pressing ahead with a new tourist tax, which will cost visitors an extra €0.5 to €4 per person per night.

The tax, which is being introduced on January 1 next year, will be based on the star-rating of the accommodation.

Those staying in hotels with a one or two-star rating will be charged 50 cents a night, at three-star hotels the tax is €1.5, four-star hotels must charge €3, and five-star €4 per person per night.

The tax must be paid direct to hoteliers on arrival.

The government is introducing the charge to boost overall tax revenues.
