The new business class will be introduced across the airline’s fleet of 58 Boeing 767-300s, used on many transatlantic routes, for completion by early next year.
The airline’s Boeing 777s will be refitted from 2007 together with Flagship Suite first class seats on aircraft which do not carry them.
The new lie-flat seats will be provided in a 2-2-2 configuration featuring personal in-flight entertainment systems and video-on-demand.
American is also investgating the introduction of real-time broadband connections in addition to its global satellite telephone service.
The carrier’s 767-300 routes include Gatwick-Dallas/Fort Worth, Glasgow-Chicago (summer), Manchester- Chicago and Manchester-Miami (subject to seasonality). The 777s operate on all main transatlantic routes to the US from Heathrow and two routes from Gatwick.
