New Mexico markets The Lone Ranger Tour
When the Lone Ranger and Tonto ride across the big screen this week, New Mexico hopes moviegoers will be enthralled by the scenery as much as by Johnny Depp.
The state is inviting tourists to experience their brand of adventure in the state "with breathtaking backdrops carved out by nature and history, temperate climate and unique blend of cultures."
A new travel resource, www.newmexico.org/filmtrails, offers itineraries, film history and lore, to help travelers and travel agents plan trips based on popular movies and TV series shot in New Mexico, including "The Lone Ranger."
The Disney movie, which opens this week, was filmed in large part on location in Rio Puerco and Cimarron Canyon near Angel Fire.
Noting a growing consumer interest in "film-related tourism," New Mexico secretary of tourism Monique Jacobson said that the state offers "many ways to experience the flavor of the Wild West and of ‘The Lone Ranger.’ "
