New way to bypass check-in queues
Passengers with hand baggage will be able to avoid long check-in queues at Heathrow by printing out their boarding passes at home or in the office.
Travellers checking in online with British Airways are being offered the service on an extended range of UK domestic routes from Heathrow. It is to be expanded across the airline’s network over the next 18 months.
Online boarding passes are now being accepted on flights to Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Manchester, Glasgow and Newcastle. Passengers from Manchester will be able to use the service on both domestic and international routes.
Boarding passes can be printed out on A4 paper and contain a unique barcode carrying all the relevant flight details.
BA said: “It enables passengers with hand baggage only to go straight to security, by-passing the need to go to a check-in desk or self-service check-in kiosk”
Passengers with bags to check in are offered a fast luggage drop facility.
The airline claims more than 12,000 online boarding passes were printed last month. The service was first introduced in Edinburgh in February.
BA’s head of product management Simon Parks-Smith said: “The system helps our customers as it saves them even more time when going through the airport.
“The technology we are using and the process for checking the barcode at the airport means that customers can be reassured that security is in no way being compromised.”
