New York Gov. Cuomo proposes name change for Stewart International Airport

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants to sink millions of dollars into an expansion of Stewart International Airport.

Cuomo has proposed $34 million development of the airport that could also see a name change.

He has also mooted a name change to New York International Airport at Stewart Field to reflect its goal of attracting more international flights.

The proposal will be put to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to approve $27 million in public money, with the remainder coming from private financing for a solar system to power the main terminal.

The airport started handling its first transatlantic routes by Norwegian Air last summer.

"By transforming Stewart Airport into a state-of-the-art transportation destination we are providing an inviting gateway to the region and supercharging an economic engine for the entire mid-Hudson Valley," Cuomo said.

The development work would see a permanent federal inspection station to handle more international arrivals, expand the terminal size and establish an express bus link from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.
