Newark near miss sparks FAA probe
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating another close call potential collision at Newark Liberty International Airport.
It happened last week when a helicopter and a United Airlines jet had a near miss.
The pilot of a Eurocopter EC145 helicopter was instructed to change course to avoid one of the runways.
A United Airlines flight was departing on a parallel runway at the same time.
The United Boeing 767 jet was able to take off without incident and landed safely in Houston.
The safety agency said a safe distance was maintained between the helicopter and the jet.
Still, the investigation will look at the role of air traffic control and any other factors.
There have been several near miss incidents in the air and on the ground at airports around the country.
It has become so frequent compared to previous years that the FAA held a recent meeting of airport stakeholders to discuss the issues.
This included staff shortages in air traffic control stations.
