Non-fliers can now enter secure terminal areas of Detroit Airport

Detroit is the latest airport to take advantage of relaxed security protocols and allow non-flying visitors into secure terminal areas.

From October 22, Detroit Metro Airport will permit a limited number of non-ticketed visitors beyond TSA screening and into passenger waiting areas of the McNamara and North terminals.

It launched the ‘DTW Destination Pass’ program which has a limit on 75 passes per day.

It is available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m every day except Mondays.

Non flying visitors should apply for a pass via the airport’s website one day before their planned visit.

If approved, they will receive an email confirmation with instructions.

They must still go through standard TSA screening like all ticketed travelers.

Other airports such as Pittsburgh and Tampa have rolled out similar programs to allow friends and family to see off departing travelers.

"Now those who are not flying can enjoy the many amenities of the airport, surprise an arriving traveler or spend extra time with a loved one who is departing," the airport authority said.

DTW Destination Pass is a pilot program that will initially run until early January 2020 but it could be extended or made a permanent service.

"The Wayne County Airport Authority will be evaluating the use of the program, along with the airport’s cost to provide this service. We will also be reviewing the completed participant surveys to determine if the program becomes permanent," said spokesperson Lisa Gass.
