Northeastern US digging out of record snowstorm
Much of the Northeastern US was digging out from a record-breaking storm that produced almost 27 inches of snow in New York City’s Central Park.
All three major New York-area airports — Kennedy, La Guardia and Newark — reopened Monday after being closed for more than a day. Hundreds of flights were cancelled.
In a domino effect, other airports closed and stranded travelers across the country.
About 7,500 travelers were stuck at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, according to officials there.
Another 40 flights were cancelled at Orlando International Airport and more than 80 in Miami
Amtrak also reported many storm-related schedule changes before resuming to a mostly normal schedule by Tuesday morning.
The weekend storm blanketed the Eastern Seaboard and Appalachians from North Carolina to Maine.
The old record for snowfall in New York was 26.4 inches dating back to 1869, the year record-keeping was started, according to the National Weather Service.
