Norwegian Air mulling Asia expansion

Monday, 4 December 20173 min read

Budget carrier Norwegian Air sees more room for growth in the Asia market.

It recently inaugurated its nonstop Singapore-London route and executives were in the Lion City to explain plans for future expansion to the local travel trade.

"Asia will be a key part of our future growth and Singapore offers a springboard to more competition and affordable fares in the market. We look forward to starting a deep relationship with Singapore’s travel trade who will now be able to confidently sell our high-quality flights to customers," said Lars Sande, global head of sales at Norwegian.

Sande and head of sales UK & Ireland, Dominic Tucker presented the airline’s vision for growth in the region to dozens of Singapore travel professionals.

Norwegian flies to Singapore from London Gatwick four times a week on Dreamliner jets and is the only low cost carrier serving the direct route.

Although the airline gave no specifics, it is pondering increased frequency on the new route and mulling linking Singapore with other cities in Scandinavia and Western Europe.

The LCC said last month one major stumbling block to intercontinental growth is an archaic rule which prevents the airline from flying through Russian airspace, adding time and cost to flights.

It is still in ongoing discussions over the issue with Russian authorities, it said.
