Norwegian Dawn runs aground on Bermuda reef
The Norwegian Dawn cruise ship carrying more than 2,000 passengers ran aground when departing King’s Wharf, Bermuda after a brief loss of power.
Power was soon restored, the cruise line said, and there are no reports of any injuries to crew or passengers.
An official at Bermuda’s Rescue Co-ordination Center said the ship came aground on a reef near Bermuda’s North Channel after being unable to steer due to the loss of power.
The ship was assessed for damage by a coast guard dive team before it was refloated several hours later.
"The ship’s propulsion was affected and, at which time, the vessel made contact with the channel bed. All guests and crew are safe," a Norwegian statement said.
The ship lost power shortly after leaving Bermuda at around 5:00 pm Tuesday where it had been in port for three days.
The ship dropped anchor offshore and is scheduled to continue its return journey to Boston today.
