NYC orders hotels to help ensure visitors are quarantining
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is ordering hotels to assist in ensuring out of state travelers quarantine as planned.
Mayor de Blasio says hotels and vacation rentals must make sure travelers complete quarantine forms before they are given room keys.
The forms help authorities track guests to make sure they are quarantining.
Guests who fail to fill out the forms now face hefty fines, and could be forced to isolate in a hospital.
The hotel executive order applies to travelers from the 35 states on the quarantine-restricted blacklist, which includes Florida and Texas.
It also includes Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
Health officials estimate as much as 20% of all Covid-19 cases came from people who imported the virus from outside the state.
The Mayor also advised New Yorkers not to travel to Covid hotspot states which make up most of the country outside the Northeast.
If they do, and do not quarantine on their return, they will ‘face consequences.’
The city has faced difficulties enforcing the quarantine order and hopes that getting hotels to assist will improve rates of compliance.
New York State on Tuesday added two more states to the quarantine list – Alaska for a second time, and Delaware.
